I’ve had so many ‘best moments’ in skiing over the last 40 years that it’s difficult to pick the most bestest ‘best moment’, but here are a few:
- any close roller ski race, especially when I’ve come out on top, including twice winning the Lancaster one-hour race in very tight finishes,
skiing, on snow, for 3 hours from my Luton front door, out into the hills and back, on a day when there was too much snow to get to work, - being awarded the SE Robert Hovey trophy for outstanding contribution to English skiing, mainly for having ‘invented’ the SE Weekend National Roller Ski courses, which continue to this day and from which the British Roller Ski Series was formed,
- taking three 11th place finishes at the World Winter Masters Games in Seefeld in January 2020,
- any moment which surpasses the above and which has yet to arrive!
- any close roller ski race, especially when I’ve come out on top, including twice winning the Lancaster one-hour race in very tight finishes,

My best skiing moment is any that finishes at a cafe with a good cappuccino and generous slice of carrot cake!

My best skiing moments are when the blisfully eerie silence is broken periodically by the sound of snow under my skis, there's a view of trees covered by powdery snow which the wind occasionally scatters on the ground and I feel I'm making a complete transition from life's stresses and worries to a trans like state where I'm at the mercy of nature's whims.

My best skiing moment is the Demino Worldloppet race March 2016 in Rybinsk Russia. The weather was unusually warm, but there was plenty of snow. Quite slushy in the afternoon but not a problem when skating & my half term training in the Les Rousses in France paid off. The pleasant scenery reminded me of Sweden - most of the track was fairly flat with some short but very steep hills. Key moments were the great Russian hospitality and meeting the Worldloppet legend Hannes Larsson as well as Dan and Barbara Mallory whose whole family has climbed Mount Everest.

Best skiing moment: So many! Finishing the 90km Vasa Oppet Spor ski race after a wonderful day's skiing, being part of the LRSNC team on the podium in Ramsau, enjoying the Yllas-Levi race in 2024. Skiing off track through the Norwegian wilderness with amazing 360 degree views ...

My best skiing moment was the total amazement of finishing my first ski race 'Jizerska' in Czechia, and more importantly I actually enjoyed it.

Realising that learning to cross country ski has given me such a great opportunity to explore the silent, open spaces.
