Roller Skiing
"From the body's perspective, roller skiing is skiing. Your skeletal muscles, heart, balance sensors, and motor cortex can't tell the difference between skiing on snow or roller skiing because they are responding to exactly the same demands. Better yet, you feel like a skier, which is a wonderful thing when the ground is bare. Roller skiing is the perfect specificity for your body and your brain."
For every British based Nordic skier the hardest thing to come to terms with is that Britain just isn’t ever going to get the snow in the same quantities and consistency that Scandinavians, Central Europeans and North Americans take for granted. Thankfully Britain is pretty well placed in the age of low cost air travel to take advantage of the best skiing that all these regions have to offer and with Rollerskiing the British Nordic skier is able to arrive in the perfect mental and physical condition on snow ready to take advantage of their precious few days on the white stuff!
Rollerskiing is not hugely dissimilar to rollerblading. The skis themselves are around 70cm in length with two large wheels on each end. The boots and bindings are the same as those used on snow and the poles are only different in that they have a more resilient carbide tip than those used on snow.
Rollerskiing is the perfect introduction to the Nordic snow sports as well as fantastic cross training for any endurance based sport. Nordic skiing is widely recognised as the most effective full body workout and exercises each major muscle group without the impact associated with running and other endurance sports. Rollerskiing also builds balance and coordination and can help those preparing for Alpine skiing, given the specificity of the muscle groups it exercises.
Roller Skiing in the Club
Roller skiing is the fastest way to improve technique and the club runs training courses throughout the year for beginners and advanced skiers. Plus there are a number of tours, some in the UK and some abroad. At Xmas we have a night roller ski in Richmaond Park with gluhwein and mince pies. For full details of the upcoming club coaching days visit the ‘Events’ page - equipment and top quality instruction will be provided by the club.
British Rollerskiing is in the ascendancy with the London Region Nordic Ski Club hosting a significant number of European rollerskiers for its four hour endurance event last October. This event is the culmination of the British Rollerski Series which begins at the start of June and runs throughout the summer, with events all over the UK. The fantastic feature of this series however, is the range of competitors that take part from those who encountered Rollerskiing for the first time at one of the introductory coaching sessions on the same day as the event, through to former Olympians and current members of the GB Cross-Country Ski Squad.
We look forward to welcoming you to the next coaching day!
